Topic for this Issue: Gandhi’s Legacy

"Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man."

Of him Albert Einstein, the great scientist, once said "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth,”

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday - Oct 2nd (He was born in 1869), here are some of his doctrines and thoughts:

On Action:
"Nearly everything you do is of no importance, but it is important that you do it"

On Truth:
“An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it.”

On Peace:
“If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children.”
“What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?”

On Determination:
“A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.”
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

On Children:
“Children inherit the qualities of their parents, no less than their physical features. Environment does play an important part, but the original capital on which a child starts life is inherited from its ancestors. I have always seen children successfully surmounting the effect of evil inheritance. That is due to purity being an inherent attribute of the soul.”
Of course, his legacy is not just his teachings, but every breath of free air that an Indian breathes. Let us try to implement some of his teachings in our day-to-day lives, as they attain more importance in today’s harried and stressful world.

Non-CRY Trivia (From Knowledgenews) Save the Frogs!!!

Apparently, frogs aren't doing as well for themselves as we all are. In September 2005, scientists met in Washington, DC, to launch a global campaign to save the frogs--and the toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians (legless, tailless tropical amphibian), too.

Why? Because last fall, a comprehensive worldwide survey found that nearly a third of the 5,700 known amphibian species are endangered. The main threats: habitat loss, pollution, and a deadly new fungal disease, chytridiomycosis, that's attacking amphibians on three continents.

While scientists look at options for halting this amphibious assault, take a look at the amphibians themselves--with this remarkable amphibian image library.
